St. George police are actively searching for an armed and dangerous suspect in connection with a reported carjacking and jewelry store robbery.

According to police, the St. George 911 Communications Center received a carjacking report around 5:44 p.m. They said that a male, armed with a gun, successfully took a vehicle and fled the area.

The suspect allegedly robbed a jewelry store on 3050 East, crashed the stolen vehicle on I-15, and then fled on foot.

The crash forced all lanes of southbound I-15 to be closed for a short period of time.

"The area surrounding 1000 East and St. George Blvd is flooded with police presence in an effort to locate the suspect," police said in a news release.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male wearing all black clothing. He is considered armed and dangerous.

2News anchor and reporter Brian Schnee, who was in the area, captured footage of police scanning the surroundings with dogs actively searching for the suspect.

Schnee asked Officer Tiffany Mitchell with St. George police about a potential connection to an earlier reported incident involving an at-large armed robbery suspect. Mitchell confirmed that the two incidents were unrelated.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact St. George police at 435-627-4300.
