[Foundation-l] A Wikimedia sidebar box for wikipedia.org

As you may know, MediaWiki:Sidebar supports defining little boxes that contain navigation links. de.wikipedia.org has used this to customize its sidebar, for example. Should we have a sidebar with the heading "Wikimedia" containing links to wikimediafoundation.org for things like: - About Wikimedia - Projects - Volunteer (info about committees, mailing lists, etc.) - Jobs (those we chooose to publicly advertise) - Chapter information This is partially a follow-up to my earlier mail re: sitenotice for chapters. I think this might be a slightly less aggressive way to raise awareness of chapters, sister projects, and the work of the Foundation in general. sep11.wikipedia.org is currently in read-only mode. I suggest the following course of action: 1) That the wiki be opened again for a period of 4 weeks. 2) That an open message is to be sent out to ask for clean-up of the wiki -- remove irrelevant content, possible lingering spam, etc. 3) That, after the cleanup is complete, the wiki is exported as a static HTML dump and hosted by a volunteer external to the Wikimedia Foundation under its own domain name. No reference should be made to it from then on as an official Wikimedia project. It might be possible to arrange advance renumeration for the domain name cost and hosting. [Foundation-l] RfC: Key priorities for my work

As I am waiting for the result to be certified, I would like to ask all of you to send me your thoughts -- privately or publicly -- on what you think the key priorities should be for my work as Board member. For instance, is there a particular issue with the chapter/WMF relation that you feel should be addressed? Is the financial reporting lacking? Do you find some organization processes difficult to understand? Are there legal problems that you feel have not received the right amount of attention? Technical issues that should be prioritized? Before responding, please note that the Board is not supposed to do operational work; that is, it merely oversees and informs the work of Foundation staff, publishes and approves reports, and makes key structural and strategic decisions. Here is a simple overview of typical Board responsibilities: http://www.managementhelp.org/boards/brdrspon.htm The Wikimedia Board, especially in this time of transition, is a bit more active than most, but it is not an operational entitity. So I won't fix the servers for you or block a vandal on a wiki outside regular admin duties. :-) But I can try to help (!) make sure that tasks are properly resourced, that reporting from the Board happens in a timely fashion, etc. And no, I won't forget that I'm not the only Board member ;-). All this needs to be coordinated properly and ideally find consensus. But your responses will help me in organizing my part of the work. There is no secret sponsorship for Taipei anymore. They are DotAsia.org and Chung-Hwa Telecom in Taiwan and they did promise the amount as we listed in the bidding page. And I believe there will be more amounts because now we have more sponsors willing to help. We keep it secret before the bidding final because DotAsia.org has bussiness in many cities, and they do not wish to offend their customers in those cities so they ask us to keep it secret until the bidding result is out. And if you wish to know, a employee from DotAsia.org now is in our team to help for organizing Wikimania 2007. I wish to remind that we should respect the sponsors because they recognize the vision of Wikimedia Foundation and they are willing to help us to host this big WM event. For the flight price, the fare we listed on the bidding page is the fare we checked in *this* August. And yes it might have estimation errors because the fare is changing every day and it should be firmed when the time of Wikimania 2007 is coming closely. It would be also related with what travel agency you choose and how you take the flight. Lovenworth and Dyas, two members of corporate law firm Dewey Ballantine, tackle unresolved issues in an essay on enforcing collaborative copyright (and suggest the need for a new class of copyright. (Are they waiting for a GNU-blessed Wiki license to emerge?) Someone should ask for a freely licensed version of the essay... "As ownership of collaborative works becomes increasingly diluted, a common point of enforcement becomes more necessary. One solution is to treat collaborative works in a similar manner as a joint work so that certain contributors to the collaborative work can enforce its copyright. Such a solution would do nothing, however, to ensure that those contributors act with the interests of the collaboration in mind.
