Stonemill Matcha

Love this place even though I'm not the biggest matcha fan. The drinks were delicious and the service was super fast.

The only unexpected part for me was the 30 min sitting limit if you ordered a drink and 1hr if you order food.

If you're looking for some fresh matcha, this is a great stop in the Mission District.

I tried the Strawberry Matcha Latte. The matcha flavors were potent but I couldn't taste much of the strawberry at all. I was a bit bummed as I love the smashed strawberry with matcha flavors; otherwise, I would've gotten a plain matcha latte.

The line can get long but it moves quickly and sometimes there will be two people taking orders. There is ample seating inside but it looks like there were a handful of folks also dining in on the katsu sandos.

There is street parking but its a short walk from the 16th St. Bart station too.

Food:
Really good, simple, clean kale salad.
Chicken katsu sandwich could have had a bit more flavor but still very good. Matcha tea delicious of course. Cheesecake soufflé was amazing, so light and fluffy and not too sweet.
Service:
You walk up and order and they bring you your food. The wait staff were all very kind.
Ambiance:
Fine. Cute. Casual.

Stonemill Matcha is a gem that I've been to multiple times over the years. I visited the Bay Area for several days and had to visit Stonemill Matcha when I found out that they were no longer permanently closed! I've always loved their iced matcha lattes, and their matcha cookies were some of the best cookies I've ever had.

I came on a Friday for lunch around 1pm and they still had some seating. There's a line for dining in, and a pickup window for online orders. I had ordered online about 30 minutes before arriving, and picked up my order to go have a picnic in Dolores Park.

Iced matcha latte: 9/10 good quality matcha, still as good as I remembered! Vibrant color, and I love that smooth grassy matcha that you can actually taste and is not overpowered by sugar. Would get again!!
Matcha cookies: 7/10 maybe it was an off day, but they don't taste as good as I remember. I liked the crunchier edges of the cookie, but didn't really like the soft texture of the center. Maybe it's better to buy the cookie dough and bake to my preferences at home, but I'm traveling from out of town.
Matchazuke: 7/10 It was good but not outstanding. I had decided to order the matchazuke because I read reviews raving about how good it was. You don't often find ochazuke with matcha, and it was decent.

Overall, I'll definitely stop by for the ice matcha latte if I'm ever in the area. I'd love to try the sandos next time and give the cookies another shot, or perhaps try the pie.

[updated review] I first went to stone mill in August 2023 (closing week) and was quite unimpressed. I came again a year later and am happy I gave it another try! The strawberry matcha had a much more vibrant color this time around and tasted earthy (no bitterness) and had the right amount of sweetness. The egg sando was SO YUMMY. The bread was soft, and the eggs were creamy without feeling too heavy. Hoping to come back to try the katsu sando. Prices are a bit high but I think you definitely pay for the quality.

We came around 4:30 pm when they were doing take out only. Ordered a hot matcha latte, sparkling matcha with yuzu, and chicken sando.

The hot matcha wasn't grainy but was a bit watery for me and had a slight bitter aftertaste. I would prefer it to be creamier. I really can't recommend this drink.

The sparkling yuzu was very carbonated and yuzu heavy. Adding the yuzu covered all the matcha flavor. Refreshing but would only order if I wanted it to taste like a yuzu soda.

The sando was too soft as it was missing the crunch from the thin skin and the slaw was also not very crunchy. The chicken was juicy and tender, but the contrast of crunch was really missed.

Overall just average but I really wouldn't recommend the matcha latte which should be one of their main/best drink here.

Not bad!!

I got their strawberry matcha latte with oat milk. The matcha is good quality, but the strawberry jam threw me off a little. It was a little sour at first!! it could've used more sugar or sweetener.

Pretty pricy, but expected for matcha!

This place is okay, but I definitely would not wait in line for a matcha latte here. I visited here twice, both times around noon on weekdays, and there was little to no wait, which was nice. The interior was also really nice, with a lot of open seating.

The first time, I ordered an iced matcha latte with 50% sweetness, but it ended up being way too bitter for me. I decided to give it another shot with 100% sweetness, but even then, it was still really bitter, which made the drink not very enjoyable.

I could tell that the matcha they use is really strong and has a nutty flavor, which some might love, but I just wish that a fully sweet drink was still actually somewhat sweet.

Got the matcha latte with extra matcha shot and the matcha sponge cake. The matcha latte was not bad but needed an extra pump of syrup. I liked the sponge cake - pretty strong chestnut flavor.

This spot will usually have a line so when I walked by when they opened I decided to come in alone to have some breakfast and a matcha latte. I really enjoyed the matcha latte. The meal was good but I would try something else like dessert. The space is very nice and relaxing. The service was great and helpful. I ordered the ginger bowl and it was good but it was a heavy choice for breakfast.
