AUGMENTIN is a combination antibiotic that can treat different types of bacterial infections in both children and adults, including ear infections, sinus infections, lower respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infection, and urinary tract infections (UTIs).

AUGMENTIN contains amoxicillin, which is a type of penicillin antibiotic that kills bacteria by preventing them from being able to make cell walls to protect themselves. It also contains clavulanate, which is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. A beta-lactamase is a type of protein that bacteria make to try and break down amoxicillin and cause it to not work. By preventing beta-lactamase from working, clavulanate protects amoxicillin from being broken down and helps it work better at fighting infections.

AUGMENTIN is typically taken by mouth 2 to 3 times a day. Your dose and length of therapy will depend on the type and severity of th infection.

AUGMENTIN is a safe and effective treatment when used for FDA licensed indications. However, like all medications, they may give you unwanted side effects. You should always discuss potential side effects with your physician to ensure the medication is suitable and right for you. You should not take AMOXIL if you have a history of allergic reaction to any of the penicillins or cephalosporins. You should also avoid this medication if you have a history of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with AUGMENTIN.

  • Serious allergic and skin reactions: hives, rash, blisters, swelling of the lips or tongue, difficulty breathing, skin reddening, blisters
  • Infectious (C. difficile-related) diarrhea: rapid heart rate, foul-smelling diarrhea, fever, nausea, frequent bowel movements (even up to 15 times per day)
  • Liver damage: swelling of your stomach, yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes, confusion, dark or brown urine

  • Probenecid may increase the levels and effects of amoxycillin

  • Coadministration with allopurinol increases the risk of rash
  • AUGMENTIN may reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives
