How Phil Spector’s hair disappeared behind bars
Photos document how Phil Spector — whose death at age 81 was announced Sunday — went from bizarre bouffants to certified bald guy while behind bars.
The record producer-turned-murderer became infamous for his eccentric courtroom coifs during his trials for the 2003 murder of actress Lana Clarkson — sporting garish wigs, including big frizzy perms as well as a platinum blond shaggy bowl cut.
Spector later denied he was wearing hairpieces, according to Billboard — but his hair situation could no longer be disputed when the public got its first look at Spector’s booking mugshot in 2009.
A 2013 picture of stringy long hair framed around his pale bald skull drew comparisons to the Gollum character in “The Lord of the Rings.”
And in a 2014 mugshot, the emaciated prisoner smiled wryly while sporting a wild long gray goatee and very little hair on his head.
It wasn’t always that way. In early photographs, the vain super-producer’s ‘do can barely be distinguished from the edgy-looking musicians he worked with.
Before his death, the 81-year-old was housed in a California prison health care facility for the state’s sick and mentally ill inmates. Sources told TMZ that he died of complications from COVID-19.
