Here are the top three stories in Birmingham today:

  1. The 2023 Hartford Nationals hosted by Move United is currently taking place until Friday, Jul. 14 in the Birmingham area and hundreds of athletes worldwide are competing. The 2023 Move United Nationals is one of the largest and longest-standing national sport championship events for athletes with physical, visual, and/or intellectual disability. Overall, many of the 400 athletes competing in the competition are hoping this inclusive event can be the stepping stone they need to make it to the Paralympics. (ABC.com)
  2. The Birmingham-based company, Analytical AI, has been handpicked by the nation to work on two major developments for the United States Air Force. The two programs will focus on improving the detection of foreign debris specifically when airplanes take off to avoid particles from destroying an engine or causing harm, as well as another centered around perimeter security and utilizing AI to do the job. According to Co-Founder and CIO Thomas Anthony, the company is excited to have been chosen to work on this project and hopes to continue doing what’s needed for national security purposes.   3. This summer, more than 5,000 students are taking part in Birmingham City Schools’ summer promotion and enrichment programs. According to Instructional Superintendent Dr. Evelyn Nettles-Hines, there are students from grades K-12 participating and this is the most enrollments the district has ever seen when it comes to summer programming. Overall, the district is offering a number of programs that span all of the city’s schools. (WVMT)

  • If your middle schooler is interested in extracurricular activities, the YMCA of Greater Birmingham is offering free memberships for any seventh-grade students. The membership is valid throughout the entire school year and will span across all seven YMCA branches throughout the area, so visit here for more information on signing up. (CBS)
  • Early in the week, Birmingham residents can expect to see spotty showers with drier weather coming as we head into the end of the week. By Tuesday morning, temperatures will start in the mid to upper 60s and eventually increase into the low 90s by the afternoon. (WVTM)
  • According to a new study from the University of Alabama, people from 12 metro areas across the state don’t make enough money to comfortably cover rent. The study showed that the median household income equals about $56,900 a year, but due to statistics from the study, these individuals should be making at least $58,800 to feel financially secure. (WBRC)
