3 Americans Found Dead At Bahamas Resort, Another Hospitalized

One of the deceased victims is a man from Birmingham, according to the man's son.

EXUMA, BAHAMAS β€” Three Americans, two men and a woman, were found dead Friday at a resort in the Bahamas, according to a statement from Bahamas Acting Prime Minister Chester Cooper.

Another woman was flown to Princess Margaret Hospital. Bahamas police and health officials are investigating the cause of the mysterious deaths in Exuma, according to the statement.

Foul play is not suspected, Cooper said.

At least one of the deceased is from Birmingham, Alabama, according to a report from WVTM 13. Austin Chiarella told the station that his father, Vincent Chiarella, is one of those who had died, and his mother, Donnis, is injured. The two were guests at Sandals Emerald Bay resort.

A clinic saw at least some of the affected individuals with "nausea, vomiting and some symptoms" on Thursday, Bahamas Health Minister Michael Darville told Eyewitness News Bahamas. They were treated and discharged before officials later found the deceased victims.

There is no public health emergency. Health officials have "some idea" of the cause but are awaiting toxicology reports before releasing information, Darville said.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force did not immediately return an inquiry from Patch.
