Birmingham Culinary Legend Announces Retirement

James Beard Award winner Dolester Miles announced her retirement from the restaurant scene in Birmingham.

BIRMINGHAM, AL β€” One of the Birmingham culinary scene's most decorated pastry chefs is retiring. James Beard Award winner Dolester Miles is stepping down after more than 40 years with chef Frank Stitt's restaurant group, according to an AL.com report.

Miles was hired by Stitt when he opened Highlands Bar and Grill in 1982.

"I just feel like I worked at the greatest restaurant for the greatest chef, and I appreciate everything Frank has done for me," Miles said in the AL.com report. "I couldn’t ask for a better job."

Miles was awarded Best Pastry Chef by the James Beard Foundation in 2018.

A Bessemer native, Miles graduated from Wenonah High School in 1975, and studied computer science at Alabama A&M University and Lawson State Community College before following her passion for baking into a 40-year career.
