BIRMINGHAM, AL β€” After a dry and cold week in Alabama, northern counties in the state have been placed under a flash flood watch Wednesday. The watch will remain in effect through Friday morning, as total rainfall amounts could exceed 4 inches north of I-59, according to the National Weather Service.

"The main threat in Alabama will come from strong, gusty winds," meteorologist James Spann said. "There is a low-end tornado threat to the west over parts of south Mississippi and southeast Louisiana."

The NWS in Birmingham said the state could see a transition from rain to freezing rain across the far northwest counties early to mid Friday morning.
