BIRMINGHAM, AL β€” Birmingham metro residents should brace for some of the coldest temperatures of the season this weekend, with lows dipping into the 20s and high teens and the chance of snow.

To add to the low temperatures, north winds of 12-22 mph will bring in some of the coldest air the area has experienced so far this season, according to meteorologist James Spann.

"Temperatures won’t get out of the 40s this afternoon, and with a deep upper trough and very cold air aloft, a few snow flurries or snow showers are possible across northeast Alabama, despite a dry air mass," Spann said."

The best chance of seeing a few snow flakes is north and east of Birmingham, he said, but no accumulation or impact is expected with temperatures in the mid to upper 30s and a gusty north wind.

"The big story is the cold air; with a clearing sky temperatures will drop into the 17- to 24-degree range over the northern half of the state early Saturday, with a wind chill index between 8 and 18 degrees," Spann said.

Saturday will be sunny with a high between 37 and 42 degrees. On Sunday, after a low in the 20s, temperatures will rise into the 50s by afternoon with a sunny sky.
