Here are the top three stories today in Birmingham:

  1. Birmingham’s historic A.G. Gaston Motel will open to the public this Thursday, Jun. 29. After several years of plans and renovations, the hotel where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. previously stayed and led strategy sessions will be open for tours on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Currently, admission to the hotel is free, but beginning in late summer an admission fee will be charged to help support the cost of operations. (AL.com)
  2. Uber recently announced that it is starting a new feature for people with kids in Birmingham, as one of 28 metro areas in the U.S. and Canada where the product will launch. The new feature will allow parents and guardians to invite teenagers ages 13-17 to create a special account allowing them to order rides and food under parental supervision. The feature will give guardians access to live trip and delivery tracking, and teens will only be able to ride with highly-rated drivers who have passed local and background screening checks. (WIAT)
  3. Birmingham CEO Erika Boeing of Accelerate Wind took home first place in the San Francisco-based Women in Cleantech and Sustainability Pitch Competition. Accelerate Wind has a goal of developing affordable wind turbines for commercial buildings and was also named a 2023 Alabama Inno Startup to Watch back in February. (The Business Journals)
