Memorial Day Travel: Road Construction May Cause Delays

As work continues on the I-20/59 and I-65 interchange, expect some delays and road closures as you travel this weekend.

BIRMINGHAM, AL – Weather permitting, the Alabama Department of Transportation will continue its project to improve the I-59/20 and I-65 Interchange, also known as Malfunction Junction, beginning Thursday and into Memorial Day weekend.

Phase 2 of the project continues Thursday, May 24, during which time I-59/20 Southbound (MP 124) will be closed from 11p.m. til 5 a.m. to set bridge girders. Friday, May 25 and Saturday, May 26, I-59/20 Northbound (MP 124) will be closed from 11 p.m. til 5 a.m. to set bridge girders.

Work on Phase 3 Thursday, May 24, includes I-59/20 Northbound closing from 11 p.m. til 5 a.m. to set bridge girders. Detour routes will be in place.

A reduced speed limit of 45 mph is in effect throughout the work zone. Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area.
