Woman Dies In South Birmingham Shooting, Suspect In Custody

A shooting Monday evening claimed the life of a 26-year-old woman, who was shot while driving.

BIRMINGHAM, AL β€” A woman is dead and another woman is in custody after a shooting Monday night. The shooting occurred just after 6 p.m. in the 900 block of 46th Place North.

Police say South Precinct officers found a vehicle that had crashed, with a woman in the driver's seat suffering from gunshot wounds. The woman, identified as 26-year-old Tamaiya Morton, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald of the Birmingham Police Department said the preliminary investigation led police to a person of interest who was taken into custody at a nearby apartment complex. The woman has not been charged in the shooting as of Tuesday morning.
