  1. On Sunday, over 100 people attended "Party for the Preserve," an event raising awareness and in opposition to a proposed development submitted in The Preserve subdivision. In August, plans circulated to change the development plan for the mixed-use part of The Preserve, which created controversy among residents and other locals. A public hearing initially was set with the Hoover Planning and Zoning Commission for Sep. 11, but developers asked for a continuance until Oct. 9 after many residents voiced major objections. 2. Hoover resident and U.S. Army Col. Gregory Parker is one of nine former employees, companies, government agencies, and other creditors trying to get back millions of dollars they say the City of Fairfield, Alabama owes them. Parker is seeking backpay after Fairfield filed for bankruptcy in 2020, and found out the city had not paid into his pension and retirement during the 13 years he served in the Army in Iraq, Afghanistan, and at Camp Shelby in Mississippi. Parker and others are taking Fairfield to bankruptcy court, but it's unclear how the city will reconcile its debt β€” at the City Council meeting on Sep. 18, a Fairfield city official reported $1,653,862.35 in the bank, 65 percent of which has restricted uses. 3. Niche released its annual list of best public high schools in Alabama for 2024, and Spain Park and Hoover High ranked 10 and 13, respectively. Schools are ranked based on academic grades β€” such as SAT/ACT scores and state assessments β€” as well as other factors, like diversity, parent and student surveys, teacher salaries, and more. Information about its ranking criteria can be found online. (AL.com)
