  1. Dangerous levels of heat and humidity will persist throughout the weekend in central Alabama, prompting heat alerts and an Excessive Heat Warning for most counties. The Jefferson County Department of Health issued a Code Orange Air Quality Alert due to unhealthy ground-level ozone concentration. However, relief from the heat wave is expected early next week as summer storms are anticipated to break the extreme conditions. (WVTM)
  2. A shooting in nearby Brookside resulted in the death of a 43-year-old man, identified as David Lynn Frazier, while another man was injured. The police chief stated that the incident seems to be domestic-related and assured that there is no ongoing threat to the community. No arrests have been made, and this is the first homicide the town has experienced in quite some time. (AL.com)
  3. The 9-year-old daughter of WVTM 13 Chief Meteorologist Jason Simpson was bitten by a copperhead snake and was quickly taken for medical care, eventually being transferred to Children's of Alabama. Despite the incident, Jason mentioned in a Facebook post that his daughter, Shelby, is resilient and receiving medicine to combat the venom. Although Shelby's leg remains swollen and she will require more time in the hospital for physical therapy, she has been able to walk with crutches and the early administration of antivenom has helped mitigate the effects of the snakebite.
