MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL — One of the long-standing department stores in the Birmingham metro is closing, as Macy's announced Wednesday that its Brookwood Village location will permanently close.

The mAcy's had been in operation at Brookwood Village for nearly 50 years.

Retailers at Brookwood Village have left the mall in droves over the last five years, with the 48-year-old mall now basically empty, aside from Target, Five Guys and Hickory Tavern.

“Stores remain an integral part of our omnichannel retail ecosystem,” Macy’s said in a statement to USA Today.“As our business evolves, we continue to optimize and reposition our store fleet to more effectively support our omnichannel sales growth and expand market share.”

The closure of the Brookwood Village store will leave the Galleria location as the only Macy's in Alabama.
