Thompson Heads Into Weekend As Top Ranked 7A Team

Thompson replaced Hoover as the top ranked team in Class 7A, but that may change after the two clash Friday night.

ALABASTER, AL - There is a new top team in the Class 7A Alabama Sports Writers Association rankings this week, as previously second-ranked Thompson swapped places with the preseason No. 1 team, Hoover. That may change, however, after Friday night when the two football heavyweights face off in what many believe could be a playoff preview.

Thompson claimed the top spot after the Warriors destroyed Foley last weekend 47-0 on the strength of senior quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa's five touchdown passes. This Thompson victory came before Hoover dropped its game against St. John's of Washington, DC, 52-14.(For more updates on this story and free news alerts for your neighborhood, sign up for your local Patch morning newsletter.)

Tagovailoa has been touted as one of the top - if not the best - quarterbacks in all of high school football, and he will face a huge test against Hoover. The Bucs lost to Thompson during the regular season last year, only to avenge the loss in the playoffs en route to another state championship.
