When police arrived at the apartment complex, the man was standing on the second floor landing of the courtyard, holding a gun, police said. Officers told him to drop the gun, because they said it was aimed down toward the people in the apartments on the first floor.

That's when police shot the man, police said. The man then went into an apartment on the second floor but then came back out when police told him to. That's when police realized he'd been hit and began giving him aid before taking him to the hospital.
