  1. The Scottsdale City Council has voted to continue the controversial bridge housing program. The program aims to assist families and seniors experiencing homelessness by providing temporary housing and case management with the goal of returning clients to independent living within 120 days. The City Council's discussion of the program is "the final step in accepting state grant funding." The original contract with Independence 47 hotel near Indian Bend and Pima Roads was approved, so the city will continue to utilize 10 rooms at the hotel to house these clients without any additional stipulations. (abc15.com, City of Scottsdale)
  2. The Scottsdale Fire Department is testing new "fire blankets" to combat electric vehicle fires. As hybrid and electric cars grow in popularity, there has been an increase in lithium-ion battery fires. These fires can be very difficult to extinguish, and they also emit extremely toxic gases. The "fire blanket" that Valley fire agencies are currently testing is "made of graphite and a silicon polymer to help isolate the flames and reduce oxygen to the fire." The hope is that this technology will "help contain these large fires, prevent toxins from spreading, and protect our first responders." (Arizona's Family, Scottsdale Fire Department via Facebook)
  3. Have you checked out Open Data Scottsdale yet? The City of Scottsdale "promotes openness, transparency, and accountability" by offering "50 publicly available datasets that can be explored by category." You can check out how many Scottsdale households have internet access in comparison to those in neighboring communities, view active building permits, locate public amenities, and more.
