Here are the top stories today in Scottsdale:

  1. Ahzane Williams and Toniesha Odom are in custody for aggravated identity theft charges after stealing wallets and phones from the purses of residents while they shopped in local grocery stores. Dianna Brouwer was purchasing soup to donate to her church at the Albertsons on Thomas and Scottsdale Roads when the duo approached her. One of them started asking her questions about the soup to distract her while the other suspect took her belongings from her purse. Similar incidents occurred at the Bashas' at McDonald Drive and Granite Reef Road, the Bashas' near Indian School and Hayden Roads, and the Fry's near Miller and Indian School Roads. Police officers tracked two of the stolen phones, pulled the suspects over, and found credit cards, IDs, and gift cards purchased with the stolen credit cards inside the vehicle. The suspects claim that they are from California, were in town visiting family, and "found all the credit cards at an unknown location and kept them for an unknown reason." All of the victims identified so far were elderly females, but you should contact SPD at 480-312-5000 if you believe you may have been a victim of a similar crime. (Arizona's Family)
  2. A man was stabbed at the 7-Eleven near Granite Reef and McDowell Roads on Sunday around 2 p.m., and he ended up hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect was detained by police, and police state there is no ongoing threat to the community. The details of what led to the incident are still under investigation. (Arizona's Family, Fox 10 Phoenix)
  3. Scottsdale Fire Department conducted a simulated mountain rescue to raise awareness and emphasize the importance of residents being prepared when they head to the hiking trails. Capt. Dave Folio hiked 2 miles up Tom's Thumb and put reporter Mickaela Castillo in the "Big Wheel," which requires five to six firefighters to carry the gurney back down a mountain. SFD rescues nearly 400 people from hiking trails every year, and encourages residents to take the appropriate steps to avoid such rescues. Safety tips include hiking early in the day, wearing proper hiking gear, staying hydrated, and bringing a fully charged cellphone. (Arizona's Family)
