Two More Tucson Pools To Open Next Week, Admission Is Free

Because of a lifeguard shortage, Tucson only opened 10 of its pools at the start of the season. It has increased lifeguard pay twice.

Tucson is set to open its Oury and Palo Verde pools next week, making 12 city pools open so far this summer. The city's goal is to open 20, but that plan has been hampered by a lifeguard shortage.

TUCSON, AZ β€” Next week, the City of Tucson Parks and Recreation department will open two more pools to add to the 10 it already opened this year.

The city was only able to open 10 of its pools at the start of the swimming season on June 2 because of a lifeguard shortage that has plagued pools across the country. Its goal is to open 10 more pools before the end of the summer.

Tucson Parks and Recreation attracted more lifeguards after it upped its lifeguard pay for the second time this year in early June, to $16.75 per hour, in response to the shortage.
