Periods of heavy snowfall are also expected. Forecasters said up to 4 inches of snow could accumulate in elevations of 5,000 to 6,000 feet, 5 to 8 inches could fall between 6,000 and 8,000 feet and 8 to 14 inches may blanket the highest peaks.

A winter storm warning for the mountains will remain in effect until 10 p.m.

Dense fog that may skew visibility and southwest winds of 15 to 25 miles per hour with gusts to 40 mph are also expected. Difficult travel conditions are expected on mountain roadways and snow chains may be required, forecasters said.

The snow showers are expected to lighten up overnight and become more scattered through Friday night.

Forecasters said rain showers may linger into Friday in the valleys around Riverside and the Coachella Valley and into Saturday in the mountains. High pressure will bring drier weather and a warming trend early next week.
