BEAUMONT, CA — The Beaumont Unified School District is currently installing over 900 security cameras across all of its campuses to enhance student and staff safety.

The $5.8 million BUSD-approved "Camera Upgrade Project" is being implemented in phases. According to the district, the first phase is slated to be completed by the end of the year, and the second is estimated to wrap up by May 2025.

"We currently have dozens of new cameras in operation with each one ready to give a watchful eye over students on their first day of school this fall," said BUSD Public Information Officer Thomas Guzowski.

The Verkada cameras provide 1,847 fields of view — 12 times more coverage than the district's current system, according to the BUSD.

"This is a major District project that took over three years of reviewing camera systems, vendor presentations, and proposals, including a rigorous selection process with multiple stakeholders,” said James Sharp, BUSD technology director.

The Camera Upgrade Project was approved by the BUSD board on Feb. 13.

District officials say campus security is a top priority now and in the future.

"'Security' is mentioned 77 times in our 2024 Long Range Facilities Master Plan. We are doing all that we can to make sure funding is directed to this effort," said Sergio San Martin, BUSD chief business official. "I see this as just a starting point in how our schools can rely on technology to increase student safety. With additional future funding, we could potentially integrate other security site improvements."

The BUSD is looking to fund additional projects. The Board of Trustees voted unanimously to place a $148 million bond measure — Measure E — on the November 2024 ballot. It is being touted as a funding mechanism to improve campus safety and relieve overcrowding. At least 55% of Beaumont voters who cast a ballot on the measure must vote “Yes” for it to be approved.
