On Thursday, April 11, at 7 p.m., the San Gorgonio Pass Historical Society will present “The Stewart Family’s Lasting Legacy in the San Gorgonio Pass,” a visual exploration of the pioneer family, including Reznor Perry Stewart and Mary Elizabeth Stewart, who settled in the pass area in the 1880s.

Among their properties was Stewart Ranch, which encompassed thousands of acres south of the railroad tracks that is now partially developed land within both Banning and Beaumont city limits. As successful ranchers, the Stewarts helped establish the San Gorgonio Pass and generously donated land and funds, contributions that support the local community and its organizations to this day.

The evening’s presentation—showcasing many historical photos—will be hosted by Jan Wages, program manager of the Laura May Stewart Foundation, which manages the multimillion-dollar trust provided by Laura May Stewart, daughter of Reznor and Mary, before Laura’s death in 1974. Per Laura’s wishes, the trust is to donate funds to “most effectively assist, encourage and promote the well-being of the inhabitants of the cities of Beaumont and Banning, regardless of race, color or creed.” Over the decades, many nonprofit programs in the San Gorgonio Pass have received considerable grants to support their endeavors.
