Boeing to Move 1,600 Jobs to Long Beach and South Bay

The ​aerospace company announced plans to shift jobs from its Huntington Beach facility to Los Angeles County.

LONG BEACH, CA -- Aerospace giant Boeing Co. announced plans to move 1,600 jobs to Los Angeles County Tuesday in its effort to consolidate its space and defense operations.

Many of the positions will come from the company’s Huntington Beach operation. Boeing officials plan to shed roughly 4.5 million square feet of building space by 2020, shifting most of the workers to El Segundo in support of Boeing’s satellite operations and to Long Beach, which serves commercial airplane operations Another 300 jobs will be shifted to Seal Beach’s Boeing facility.

The Huntington Beach campus will be reduced but not entirely shut down.

“In order to push ourselves farther and win more business, we need to make the most of our resources and talent,” Leanne Caret, president and CEO, Defense, Space & Security, said in a written statement. “These steps will help us be a stronger partner for our customers worldwide.”

In addition to shifting jobs to Los Angeles County, other jobs will move to St. Louis, and Huntsville, Ala.
In all, Los Angeles County gains about 1,600 positions, St. Louis gains 500 and Huntsville will get about 400 jobs.

“Making better use of our facilities will enhance efficiency and promote greater collaboration,” Caret added. “This will help drive our global growth in Boeing’s second century.”
