The Maritime Symposium is a youth diversity event. It is the brainchild of Joey King. To support this program during the Long Beach Gives period of giving, please click here to make your donation.

It brings out the stories of those who started in educational programs and at jobs and continued along parallel yet divergent paths. The first event was held on April 30, 2022, and was the first significant event of Makersville Services, a 501(c)3 that supports social entrepreneurs through support of their causes.

There are 3 parts to the Maritime Symposium. A Sharing of stories, a competition and a diversity Job Fair. In 2023, our event will continue and grow.

Maritime Symposium - We are seeking new speakers, especially those with friends, who might support through their sharing of their parallel yet divergent paths. Perhaps you started at a Port of Long Beach program at California State University, Long Beach. Perhaps it was at Long Beach City College, at Cabrillo High School, Poly High School or Jordan High School. Perhaps you were at none of those programs, but you worked with and continue a friendship with someone in shipping, transportation, logistics, operations. If this is you, please like and share this post, and connect with us. Connect with me.
Competition - At the competition, community-created booths and exhibits will address the competition goals, and provide information and activities for those who attend the event. This year's competition details are being worked on, but it will be related to Global Transportation Systems for goods. It's so much more fun that way. Perhaps our participants will choose to explore how a bamboo shirt is made, from start to finish, including how it gets to us, wherever we are. Perhaps it will be about the road trains in Australia, as multi-trailer trucks transport goods to remote parts of the country. Perhaps it will be about the Suriwongse river in Bangkok, or about the Nile in Egypt, or the floating markets of Thailand. In the spirit of diversity, competition entries can be in one of 4 languages: English, Spanish, Tagalog and Khmer. Professional groups and companies are invited to enter the competition, and to help support the judging.

Diversity Job Fair - This fair is to provide our participants of all ages with a rounded view of jobs available in the transportation and goods-movement fields, starting with entry level jobs, but certainly demonstrating all the possibilities. Our 2022 job fair was organized by and with the support of the office of the 64th district California State Assemblymember Mike Gipson.
