Escondido Man Arrested In Deadly DUI Crash On Interstate 5: CHP

The crash in Carlsbad left another driver dead and seriously injured her passenger, according to the CHP.

ESCONDIDO, CA — An Escondido man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, murder and other charges in connection with a crash that killed another driver and seriously injured her passenger on Interstate 5 in northern San Diego County, authorities said Tuesday.

The crash happened shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday in the southbound lanes of I-5, near Cannon Road, in Carlsbad. Andrew David Shaw, 44, was driving a Ford Raptor pickup truck and rear-ended the back of a Nissan Altima, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash left the 53-year-old driver of the car and her 31-year-old passenger with major injuries, CHP officer Hunter Gerber said. They were taken to a hospital, where the driver, a La Jolla resident, was pronounced dead. Her name was withheld pending family notification.

Shaw was taken to a hospital for minor injuries. He was arrested Monday and booked on suspicion of DUI, gross vehicular manslaughter, murder and resisting arrest. He was being held in the Vista Detention Facility.
