ESCONDIDO, CA — San Diego Humane Society supporters raised nearly $140,000 during Walk for Animals North County, the organization announced.

More than 1,000 walkers and their dogs — and even a goat — participated in the 25th annual event Saturday at Kit Carson Park in Escondido. Funds will benefit 40,000 animals the nonprofit expects to care for in the coming year, according to San Diego Humane Society.

"Getting everybody together is critically important to us," said Dr. Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of San Diego Humane Society. "We wouldn't exist without the community that we are so lucky to care for — not just the animals, but their people."
