ESCONDIDO, CA — A salmonella outbreak prompted the recall of a salami product sold at Trader Joe's in Escondido and across the country.

Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned the public not to eat Citterio brand Premium Italian-Style Salame Sticks after the product was linked to a salmonella outbreak reported in California and several other states.

The CDC advised people to throw the sticks away, regardless of the "best by" date. Items and containers that may have been in contact with the sticks should be thoroughly cleaned with hot soapy water, the CDC said.

The product has potentially sickened at least 20 people and sent three others to the hospital, according to the CDC.

"Nine people were interviewed about foods they ate before getting sick, and eight reported eating or maybe eating this product," the CDC said. "Investigators are still working to determine if additional products may be contaminated."

Trader Joe's voluntarily pulled the sticks from its shelves, but the item may be sold at other grocery stores, the CDC warns.
