San Diego County Government: St. Teresa Of Calcutta Villa Brings 400 Affordable Housing Units Downtown

A new affordable housing community in East Village officially opened today in downtown San Diego with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebration. Father Joe’s Villages St. Teresa of Calcutta Villa is a 14-story tower at 14th and Commercial streets.

The $145 million project features 407 living units for families, senior citizens and individuals with disabilities who are experiencing homelessness. Eighty of the units are earmarked for veterans.

The property includes studio apartments, one- and two-bedroom apartments, community rooms, a fitness room, children’s play areas, dog runs and community gardens. It will provide housing for over 500 people in need a permanent place to call home and free up space in area shelters.

Individuals and families must qualify by income to become residents of the building.

St. Teresa of Calcutta Villa was funded through a combination of private and public dollars including a County investment of $14 million in No Place Like Home Program funds along with a 20-year commitment to providing behavioral health services. It’s the largest County investment in a single affordable housing project to date.
