Vehicle Hits, Seriously Injures Boy In San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, CA — A 12-year-old middle school student who ran through a marked crosswalk against the signal was struck by a vehicle Monday near his school in San Marcos and airlifted to a hospital in unknown condition.

Witnesses told deputies the victim and another 12-year-old boy ran westbound through the crosswalk at the intersection of Woodland Parkway and Rock Springs Road about 2:30 p.m.

The driver of a white Nissan approached the intersection southbound on Woodland Parkway and was unable to avoid hitting the first boy while the second boy narrowly avoided being struck, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

The driver stayed at the scene as witnesses and employees of nearby Woodland Park Middle School, located at 1270 Rock Springs Rd., where the boys attended classes, provided medical treatment on the unconscious and injured boy until paramedics arrived, the department said.

Medics airlifted the victim to Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, Lt. Nancy Blanco said. His name and age were not released. The second student was released to the custody of school officials and the parents of both boys were notified of the accident.

The cause of the accident was under investigation, but sheriff's detectives said neither alcohol nor drugs were suspected as a factor in the crash.
