GILROY, CA — Without community leaders, Gilroy wouldn’t hum along nearly as smoothly as it does. We’d miss their contributions in big and small ways.

Patch has partnered with T-Mobile to recognize these often unsung community leaders and celebrate their contributions.

This submission comes from Melissa Cubangbang, a Gilroy reader who nominated Sam Brown.

What does this community leader do?

Co-founder of a nonprofit named PITSTOP OUTREACH, which directs all assistance towards the homeless community in South county (Morgan Hill, San Martin, and Gilroy, CA). Whether it be delivering meals, clothing, blankets, and many more supplies, or taking place on the Lived Experience Advisory Board through Destination: Home; or taking on the position as Special Projects Leader and alongside the ReEntry Center at Carry the Vision, Sam keeps moving forward and "Giving back what was given to me."

Why do you believe the community leader should be recognized or honored?

Known as "Pit" (short for Pitbull). With a lengthy, not-so-approving record and upbringing since the age of 11, Sam experienced his breakthrough and turned his life around. Now he assists anybody that is willing and open to change one's LIFE. From helping the homeless, individuals exiting the jail/prison system, or even a friend to lend a ear and give an honest opinion, Sam is someone that we all can connect and confide in, in our own unique way (no hesitation in accepting "ASSHOLE" as some may call him). Sam reminds us all that no matter where we came from, we got to keep pushing on and moving forward towards the best for the next generation.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the community hero?

Proud to have the title of "Asshole", but we all really know him to be a teddy bear. He can be your biggest enemy or your greatest protector.
