WEST COVINA, CA — Foothill Transit's fleet of electric buses was supposed to last 12 years, but the agency says 13 of them have begun to break down after less than 10 years of service, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported.

The buses primarily ferried passengers in Pomona and La Verne, but chronic mechanical issues have cost the transportation agency $5 million, the paper reported. Foothill Transit has been using 32 electric buses since 2010.

Foothill Transit provides transportation services for several cities throughout the San Gabriel and Pomona valleys, including Claremont, Diamond Bar, Glendora, La Verne, Monrovia, Pasadena and Walnut.

Rather than continuing to fix the buses, the transit agency is exploring the possibility of relinquishing some of the broken buses to the Federal Transit Administration, according to the Valley Tribune.
