Glendora Native Joins Men's U. S. Soccer Team January Camp

Glendora native soccer star to join the U.S. Men's national soccer team's annual January camp in Carson.

GLENDORA, CA — A Glendora native, Toronto FC midfielder Marky Delgado was among the five players from Los Angeles or Orange counties called in Monday for the U.S. men's national soccer team's annual January camp at the National Training Center in Carson. Delgado is among 10 players who will be attending their first men's national team training camp and among 15 who have never played for the national team.

"We're excited about our 2018 January camp roster," acting U.S. men's national team coach Dave Sarachan said. "It's all about the future and opportunity.

The Glendora-born Delgado was a product of the Chivas USA Youth Academy and signed a homegrown contract with the now-defunct Major League Soccer team in April 2012 at age 16.

Delgado went on to make his pro debut at age 17 on Oct. 3, 2012. He played in 37 games with Chivas USA over three seasons, scoring twice and assisting on two goals.

Delgado was chosen by Toronto FC in the dispersal draft after Chivas USA disbanded. He has eight goals and 10 assists in 74 regular-season games with Toronto FC over three seasons.

The other players with Los Angeles or Orange County ties called into the camp were:

  • Los Angeles Galaxy forward Gyasi Zardes, a former standout at Leuzinger High School in Lawndale;
  • Minnesota United FC forward Christian Ramirez, a former standout at La Quinta High School in Westminster and Concordia University Irvine;
  • Seattle Sounders FC midfielder Cristian Roldan, the 2013 Gatorade National Player of the Year in soccer while attending El Rancho High School in Pico Rivera;
  • Chicago Fire defender Brandon Vincent, who was raised in Valencia and played club soccer for Real So Cal.

Players are due to report Wednesday to the National Training Center. The players called in will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in an exhibition game Jan. 28 at the StubHub Center.

All the players called into camp are members of MLS teams, except for goalkeeper Bill Hamid, who plays for the Danish club Midtjylland, and forward Rubio Rubin, who is unattached.

Zardes is the only Galaxy player on the team, which also includes one player from the Los Angeles Football Club, the MLS expansion team set to begin play March 4, defender Walker Zimmerman.

"We clearly feel that we want to have a look at these players that have the chance to be a part of the national team for a number of years to come. It's a long journey forward, but this is the first step starting in 2018 for the program and for these players to now get experience at this level."
