"The Nun," the latest installment of the chilling "Conjuring" horror film series, easily dominated North American theaters over the weekend, spoiling the debut of Jennifer Garner's action/drama "Peppermint," according to final figures released Monday.

"The Nun" opened with $53.8 million between Friday and Sunday, according to box-office tracker comScore.

Garner's "Peppermint" was a distant second, earning $13.4 million in its opening weekend. That was just good enough to finish ahead of the romantic comedy "Crazy Rich Asians," which continued doing solid box-office business and earned another $13.1 million over the weekend. The film has earned $135.8 million during its four weeks in theaters.

The prehistoric-shark thriller "The Meg" took fourth place with $6.1 million, followed by the drama-thriller "Searching," which earned $4.6 million.

Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were "Mission Impossible - Fallout" ($3.9 million); "Disney's Christopher Robin" ($3.4 million); "Operation Finale" ($2.9 million); "BlacKkKlansman" ($2.6 million); and "Alpha" ($2.5 million).
