Here are the top 3 stories in Healdsburg today:

  1. The Healdsburg Prune Packers have done it again — they just won state championships for the third year in a row! Our local baseball team in California's collegiate summer league, a warmup ground for the major leagues and a place for college players to stay sharp in the off-season, won their final series 2-1 against Arroyo Seco in SoCal over the weekend. The team wrote on Facebook after the last win on Sunday: "THANK YOU, Sonoma County, for your support, your unstoppable and beautifully loud cheers from our century-old grandstands at Rec Park in Healdsburg, and your unbeatable community spirit all summer long. The Healdsburg Prune Packers are deeply honored to carry on a local baseball tradition in the heart of wine country since 1921. Thank you for being part of this very special chapter in our county's baseball history. You made 2023 a season we will never forget. This win is for you!" You can read a full recap of their state championship games in the Press Democrat; they sound like some real nail-biters. (Healdsburg Prune Packers via Facebook & Press Democrat; paywall)
  2. Remember in early July when police found a man dead on Matheson Street after he allegedly attacked employees at multiple Healdsburg hotels? The man was later identified as Abel Garza, a 41-year-old father of three from Santa Rosa. And local police officials now say they've arrested the person they think may have killed Abel. Here's the full announcement issued yesterday by the Healdsburg Police Department: "Earlier today HPD investigators served an arrest warrant in conjunction with the death of Abel Garza on July 3, 2023. After a thorough investigation and weighing all evidence in the case, the investigation was submitted to the Sonoma County District Attorney’s office for consideration of charges. An arrest warrant was issued for Romario Morga Cisneros (34 years old from Santa Rosa) for involuntary manslaughter. Cisneros was involved in the altercation with Garza immediately preceding his death, and the investigation revealed that Cisneros's actions exceeded self-defense when he struck Garza with a metal object. Investigators took Cisneros into custody and booked him into the Sonoma County Jail on the arrest warrant. Bail was set at $30,000." (Healdsburg Police Department via Facebook)
  3. Eight different weed businesses are in the running to fill two potential spots for dispensaries in Healdsburg, now that city rules allow them to operate here. City officials say they'll be reviewing the eight applications over the next month or so, and will announce which businesses make it to the final interview phase by Sept. 19. Interviews will then happen in October — and a final decision could come before the year is over. The applications submitted by the eight hopefuls aren't available for the public to read yet, "in order to ensure fairness and respect the competitive process," the city says. However, officials did post a list of their names and proposed addresses online. They include: Flora Terra on Moore Lane, Jane on Mill Street, Kure Wellness on Hudson Street, Mercy Wellness on Dry Creek Road, Off the Charts and Solful on Healdsburg Avenue, Sparc on Grove Street and Thi Wellness on Front Street. More details below! (City of Healdsburg & City of Healdsburg via Facebook)

Healdsburg pics of the day:

Kathy Birdsong took this pic at the first-ever "Healdsburg Gala for the Arts" at THE 222 over the weekend. "It was a fun event with lots of people, great food and great entertainment!" she says. The Press Democrat also published a nice recap of the gala, during which "more than 200 attendees raised tens of thousands of dollars for several Healdsburg nonprofits." And Bruce Mentzer of the Healdsburg food justice nonprofit Farm to Fight Hunger took this pic recently of "volunteers in Healdsburg packing just harvested vegetables for donation to the community." (Photo courtesy of Bruce Mentzer)
