Here are the top stories today in Healdsburg:

  1. You know that big new park that the City of Healdsburg plans to open just north of Parkland Farms, as part of the deal with the Montage resort? Well, they're trying to find a good name for it now — and they want your help. The going name has been Saggio Hills, but that was never supposed to be permanent. "Your suggestions are pivotal in influencing the identity of this soon to be cherished space," city officials say. Plans for the park include sports fields, a trail network, a doggie play area, a landscaped hangout area, wetlands and plenty of open space. Anyone who wants to suggest a name can do so on the city's website by Oct. 29. After that, the Parks & Rec committee will reportedly narrow the list down to their four or five favorites — which will then be voted on by the City Council. The Healdsburg Tribune also reports that city leaders are still looking for a big donor (or multiple) to help with the park's $35 million price tag, but that they've "rejected the idea that the entire 38-acre park, spreading between Parkland Farms and the Montage resort, might end up with the name of its largest donor," like what happened with the Foley Family Community Pavilion. 2. Looks like the latest fancy hotel that Piazza Hospitality wants to build downtown, this one next to John & Zeke's, will be allowed to move forward after all — thanks to an error that city officials made when passing an ordinance back in late 2018/early 2019 that would have limited hotel construction in the downtown area. The Healdsburg Tribune published a story last month pointing out that Piazza's proposed 16-room "Hotel Healdsburg Residences" project at 400 Healdsburg Ave. might actually not be allowed, considering the city accepted their application on the same day the ordinance was supposed to go into effect. But now, city officials have discovered the entire ordinance is moot. From the city: "In conducting an internal review, City Staff discovered the ordinance adopted on December 17, 2018 was published incorrectly after adoption, rendering the ordinance itself invalid. Specifically, the ordinance was published on January 10, 2019, 24 days after adoption, whereas ordinances are required to be published within 15 days after adoption in order to be effective. To correct this error, on September 18, 2023 the City will bring the original ordinance back to the City Council for adoption and proper noticing. The content of the ordinance remains unchanged from 2018 and limits new hotels within the Downtown Commercial district to no more than 5 rooms per block face. Staff will recommend that the policy be approved as an urgency ordinance that will be effective immediately on September 18." But yeah, that wouldn't apply to the Piazza project. Healdsburg pic of the day:

Becky Gittings Basque shared some great pics of Healdsburg fire officials, including Chief Mark Basque, paying their respects at the 9/11 memorial in the plaza yesterday morning. Mayor Ariel Kelley was in attendance as well. She writes on Facebook: "I just got home from the Plaza, where I paid my tributes at the piece of I-beam from the World Trade Center that adorns the southeast corner of the park. Healdsburg firefighters are standing watch by the memorial this morning in honor of the 343 fallen first responders who died that day — as well as the thousands of others who perished. Having this small memorial in Healdsburg is a reminder that we must never forget the horrors and heroism of that day. The way that even in our darkest hour, people came together shoulder-to-shoulder to support their families, communities, and nation." (Photo courtesy of Becky Gittings Basque)
