Here are the top 4 stories in Healdsburg today:

  1. Healdsburg Bagel Company will open a brick-and-mortar Jewish deli called "Drewish" later this week along the alley that bridges Healdsburg Avenue with the CVS shopping center parking lot, inside what used to be the broke-down Wild Flowers Saloon. The deli's hours are 7:30 a.m. through 2:30 p.m. (or until they run out of food) on every day except Tuesday and Wednesday. One customer who stopped by Sunday tells the Shop Local Healdsburg blog: “It was so good! Pickles were excellent!” Here's some more info from Sonoma Mag. "Owner Drew Ross has chosen to call his concept a Drewish Deli (a play on his name) because it won’t be exactly like the Jewish delis he grew up with. 'The deli is the natural progression to my business. I’ve eaten at Jewish delis my whole life, and mine won’t exactly be a full deli but a hybrid version,' Ross said. Expect traditional deli offerings like housemade lox, pastrami, corned beef, chopped chicken liver mousse, matzo ball soup, knishes, smoked whitefish and sturgeon, challah, bagels and schmears." You can check out the full menu on the deli's website. (Drewish Deli & Shop Local Healdsburg via Instagram & Sonoma Magazine)

  2. Around 60 people reportedly showed up to the Maui wildfire relief fundraiser at at Memorial Beach over the weekend. "The event was organized by Skip Brand, owner of Healdsburg Running Company," the Press Democrat writes, "and cohosted by Lise Asimont from Dot Wines. The in-person fundraiser raised about $2,000 plus another $2,000 from online donations, which will go toward the Hawai’i Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund, Brand said. The swim was part one of three fundraisers for Maui fire victims. The next one is planned for Aug. 27, which will be a paddle for Maui at Healdsburg Veterans Memorial Beach. He said the date of the third event is still to be determined, but will likely be held in Maui to help bring money back into the local economy, 'when they’re ready for us,' Brand said." And elsewhere in the county on Sunday, a fundraiser hosted by California state senator and Healdsburg native son Mike McGuire raised another $12,000 for Maui, according to Healdsburg City Councilmember Chris Herrod, who says he attended both events. 3. I missed this back when it happened! About a week after that big fire broke out at the North Village development site across from the Montage, another smaller fire on Aug. 6 apparently charred the edge of the Mill District development at the other end of town. I can't find any official reports on the fire, but Healdsburg resident Tessa Kraft witnessed it and took some pics of the damage. "Avoid the south end of town," she wrote on Facebook that afternoon. "There’s a fire near the Mill District shed & bus stop shelter. Mostly out now but HB Ave closed in both directions south of the roundabout!" And a little while later, she wrote: "All clear now. PulsePoint had it as a vegetation fire. It had very thick black smoke & flames on the fence when I went by before the emergency vehicles got there." (Facebook Groups & Facebook Groups)

  4. Remember the series of "community encuentros" that Healdsburg city leaders hosted in late 2022 and early 2023, where they listened to neighbors' opinions on the state of "diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI)" in town? Here's what has come of those talks, according to the Press Democrat. An "educational consulting firm that partnered with Healdsburg to help the city develop its DEI plan" called Acosta Latino Learning Partnership reportedly presented a list of 41 recommendations to the City Council at their Aug. 7 meeting. From the PD: "Some of the recommendations include establishing a director of equity and community outreach position to focus on the city’s internal work; revive labor celebration days to acknowledge agricultural workers; expand the city’s housing department with Spanish-speaking staff; create a youth-mentoring program; establish an arts and cultural center. City Council agreed to host a follow-up workshop to look at the categories of the recommendations that will 'flow into our goal-setting and budget process for next year,' said Mayor Ariel Kelley." Healdsburg pics of the day:

Healdsburg resident Jessica Hicks shared these pics of a fox family that has moved into her backyard near Georgi Park. "I'm in love with them," she says. "They live under my deck. In the third photo you can see the hole they made to get in. I’ve heard that they will only stay a few weeks while they wean the babies, but I’m hoping they stay forever."
