Preston Fire Burns Near Cloverdale

The wildfire broke out near the Thousand Trails Russian River campground.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA — A vegetation fire that broke out Tuesday north of Cloverdale burned 11 acres and was 80 percent contained Wednesday morning.

The Preston Fire was reported around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at North Redwood Highway and Preston Drive, off the east side of Geysers Road — near the Thousand Trails Russian River campground.

The initial 2-acre blaze moved uphill at a rapid rate, Cal Fire's Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit said.

Firefighters from Cal Fire and the Northern Sonoma County Fire Protection District were among those who battled the wildfire, which was 60 percent contained and 11 acres by 9 p.m.

Containment improved to 8o percent by Wednesday morning, Cal Fire said in an update.

"Forward progress on the fire has been stopped. Crews will be back at the site Wednesday, patrolling the area and looking for hot spots to extinguish."

Nine engines, two water tenders and one crew were still assigned.

The cause of the fire was under investigation. There were no reports of structure loss or injuries in the Preston Fire — the lone fire Wednesday morning in Sonoma County.

The nearby Point Fire was declared 100 percent contained at 5:30 p.m. Monday after burning for eight days, charring 1,207 acres, destroying three homes, damaging two structures, and injuring one firefighter. Still no word on whether a cause was determined.
