HOLLYWOOD, CA — An attempted-murder suspect who escaped from an Inland Empire jail on Sunday, evading capture for over 24 hours, is back behind bars after he was found over 50 miles away in Hollywood on Monday, according to authorities.

The inmate, Deshaun Stamps, 29, of Riverside, had been in custody since January 2023 for charges of attempted murder and assaulting a police officer, according to the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department.

Law enforcement were urged by the sheriff to exercise "extreme caution" in their attempt to locate and arrest Stamps, who has several prior felony convictions.

Stamps evaded law enforcement's attempts to find him — which included K9 and helicopter searches — for over 24 hours. He was located and arrested Monday near Hollywood Boulevard and La Brea Avenue by the Los Angeles Police Department, according to the sheriff.

Authorities have not revealed how Stamps was able to escape custody.

Stamps' escape came less than a week after he was ordered by a judge to undergo a psychiatric evaluation after the judge expressed doubt about his competency to stand trial, the San Bernardino Sun reported.
