Left-Turn Signals Added To Los Feliz Boulevard

Collisions stemming from heavy traffic during Greek Theatre events led the city to install new left-turn signals on Los Feliz Boulevard.

City officials say navigating Los Feliz Boulevard and Vermont Avenue will be less perilous after the installation of new left-turn signals.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Travel on Los Feliz Boulevard should now be safer and more efficient after the city recently installed three new left-turn signals at Los Feliz Boulevard and Vermont Avenue, according to Councilmember Nithya Raman's office.

There was previously only a single left-turn arrow on the traffic light facing westbound traffic on Los Feliz Boulevard. City crews on Feb. 17 activated left-turn arrows on the eastbound, southbound and northbound lights, Raman's office said.

The boulevard is frequently jammed with traffic due to its status as a major connector to the 5 Freeway. Events at the Greek Theatre often bring even more traffic, leading to a high number of crashes from vehicles attempting unprotected left turns, Raman's office said.

City transportation officials determined the new signals were necessary due to the heavy traffic flow from events.

“We know that protected left turn signals not only improve traffic flow but quite literally save lives,” Raman said in a release. “At a time when LA is fast becoming one of the most dangerous cities for fatal traffic collisions, it is critical that we seize every opportunity to implement mobility and safety improvements.

"This stretch of Los Feliz Blvd is one of the busiest corridors in Council District 4 and I am so grateful that we were able to advocate for three new protected left turn signals to the Los Feliz Boulevard/Vermont intersection, continuing to meet my office’s goal of installing safer street infrastructure across the district.”

The development was met with a positive reaction from Greek Theatre leaders.

“CD4 deserves a big round of applause for getting this project done. We all know that big changes happen through many small steps,” Greek Theatre Advisory Committee Chair Standolyn Robertson said. “The carve-out and turn signal will substantially impact the egress from Griffith Park on concert nights. The Greek Theatre Advisory Committee has stood behind this project from the beginning, and we have made its completion our top priority for the past four years. We are proud to have championed this effort, and seeing it come to fruition is exciting.”
