Misguided Kalu Yala Criticism Won’t Stop Progress

Despite Criticism, Kalu Yala Remains Triumphant

We live in a society where industrialization is at its peak. Companies are looking to maximize their profits through mass production. Agricultural sector becomes more and more commercialized, leading to use and abuse of farmland, animals, plants, and other produce. Continuous use of non-sustainable energy resources is still being implemented with the agenda of seeking more revenue.

What is the end result of this continuous urbanization?

We are indeed seeing the effects of these actions at present. We see natural disasters. We see pollution. And we also experience the deadly effects of calamities that are caused by the boomerang effect of the natural cycles we disrupted.

This is what Jimmy Stice, the founder of Kalu Yala had in mind when he first started this project in the remote land in Panama. He didn't let criticism of Kalu Yala stop his endeavors. He believed that it is possible for humans to create an eco-friendly space that leaves no carbon footprint, is self-sustaining, and allows continued growth and modernization despite its planet-conserving efforts.

What is Kalu Yala?

A project of Jimmy Stice, this remote community is made up of residential homes and other infrastructures that are meant to be self-sustaining. The village is powered by natural sources such as water and light, and the food is harvested in the local area. Through this project, Mr. Stice believes that the village can be a blueprint for a sustainable community that can be a stellar example for the rest of the world. The community is continuously growing, and it has used criticism to become stronger and advocate for their cause worldwide.

There are several local residents and professionals already living in the area--some of them are doctors, engineers, researchers as well as students looking for opportunities to learn about sustainable living. The village is also known as a great place for travelers to enjoy and learn about the systems that can make the world a cleaner, safer and healthier place.

The Sustainability Goal and 4 Reasons Why We Should Support It

Sustainability isn't just a trend--it's a necessity. It's not just important for the future, it's also important for our health and safety. Just like any other scientific equilibrium, anything that is disturbed will create a different outcome, and we are seeing the devastating effects now in the world as we experience hurricanes, earthquakes, storms and other calamities caused by our neglect of the planet. Here are the reasons why we should support sustainability:

1. It is the only planet we have.

Until scientists have found a way for us to inhabit other planets, Earth is our only home and the only place we can live in. Taking care of the planet is imperative to our survival. The community in Panama has this goal in mind--it is for people to realize that every action has its own set of consequences.

2. It is for our health.

Diseases such as lung problems, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer all have environmental factors. The food we eat, the air we breathe and even the things we experience all causes different effects to our body which we may never see on the surface level. These factors interact and affect our health in a myriad of ways. Protecting the earth's sustainability will help us improve our quality of health in the present and in the future generations to come.

3. It is our responsibility to other creatures.

A lot of living creatures depend on us for their survival. It isn't just domestic animals that are affected, these include all living creatures even in the wild. It is our responsibility to be stewards of their welfare. We are given the capability to build technology, create societies and improve ourselves, but these creatures also depend on us. The measure of our compassion is shown by how much we are willing to care for those who cannot help themselves.

4. It is our legacy to leave behind.

We might be thinking we can do anything that pleases us without a consequence. Truth be told, all our actions have their own set of outcomes, and showing neglect will only leave a legacy of ruin to the future generations. Nobody wants to be left with a desolate land, an uninhabited place, and a polluted community where no resources exist. When we preserve our planet, we think of our children. We think of the legacy we leave behind, and how the people in the future can benefit from our care.

Jimmy Stice and his project are one of the many things we can support to help build a sustainable way of life at present and in the future generations to come. Life isn't all about consumption and personal agendas--it is also about giving back, showing our care, and creating a community that's evergreen for the better.
