WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA — Rage, the popular gay nightclub located in WeHo's Rainbow District, will not reopen after the coronavirus pandemic. The club has been in business for 37 years and was known for its themed event nights, daytime restaurant and occasional 18 and older events.

Manager Rod Madril confirmed the news via Facebook.

"My employment since May 1997," Madril wrote. "It’s almost a lifetime! The good times will always be cherished, as will the staff...past & present! It’s been a journey meeting sooooo many AMAZING people! So many! Thanks for all the memories, friendships and love!"

According to Wehoville, Rage was struggling to negotiate a new lease with the property's owner, Monte Overstreet. The current lease was set to end in November.

Flaming Saddles, a nearby bar also on property owned by Overstreet, closed in August after owners said they couldn't reach an agreement over unpaid rent during the coronavirus.

Rage's popularity had dwindled in the months leading up to the pandemic, and did not reopen during the brief time period in June where Governor Gavin Newsom allowed bars to serve customers.

It's the latest in a string of business closures along Santa Monica Boulevard. Basecamp Fitness, Gym Sportsbar, Halal Guys and several other businesses have also shuttered since the start of the pandemic.
