HOLLYWOOD, CA — City officials are planning several street projects around Mulholland Drive meant to address public safety and traffic issues caused by tourists seeking views of the Hollywood Sign.

Here are the plans advanced by the City Council on Tuesday:

  • Erecting permanent fencing to replace a temporary barrier along Mulholland Drive between Canyon Lake Drive and Durand Drive near Lake Hollywood Park. The fence is meant to discourage vehicles from stopping along the two-lane road.
  • Installing a traffic circle at the intersection of Canyon Lake and Mulholland drives, meant to improve traffic safety.
  • Exploring options to build a concrete parkway between the curb and sidewalk on Canyon Lake Drive from Arrowhead Drive to Mulholland Highway to reduce erosion.
  • Constructing accessible loading zones on Canyon Lake Drive.

"We are seeing a huge influx of visitors traveling along narrow residential streets to get up-close views of the sign — something that these neighborhoods have faced for a long time, but that for me, since I've only been here for two-and-half years, I'm really seeing the full impact of this for the first time," Councilwoman Nithya Raman, who represents the area, said at Tuesday's meeting.

Raman said she plans to create a working group with community members to ensure neighborhood concerns are heard in addressing travel issues near the Hollywood Sign.

The council's actions instructs city staff to report back to the lawmakers later this year with more concrete plans.

The efforts are part of a broader package introduced by Raman to address neighborhood concerns around the Hollywood Sign. Another plan advancing through the legislative process would reroute the Wonder View Trail off a residential street.
