Happy Monday, Huntington Beach; today is National Flapjack Day! Here's everything you need to know going on locally today.

Today, the Rodgers Seniors' Center gets demolished. Also, don’t run out of time to apply for a fireworks stand permit. Finally, Historic Wintersburg has launched a successful letter-writing campaign.

  1. Rodgers Seniors' Center demolition begins today. Over the next few months, there will be grading, trenchwork, and hard as well as landscaping. The projected opening date is March of next year. (@CityofHBPIO, 2)
  2. Does your organization sell Fourth of July fireworks as a fundraiser? HB allows the use of “safe and sane” fireworks. “Non-profit organizations may apply for the opportunity to operate one of 15 allowed fireworks stands to raise funds for their charitable cause.” If you’d like to score one of these permits, apply now. The applications are due at the City Clerk’s office no later than March 31 by 5 p.m. (City of HB)
  3. The Historic Wintersburg organization has launched a successful letter-writing campaign. Already, the Tuna Canyon Detention Station Coalition and classical Japanese dance performer N. Hayata have addressed the HB City Council. The goal is to hold Republic Services responsible for the security and maintenance of the historic site. (@WintersburgHB, 2)
  4. Be Well has released its numbers that began in August of last year up to January 2022. Since the program began, it received 870 calls; in January, it took 201 calls. Of these, 647 calls dealt with mental health; 158 focused on proactive engagement, 50 were substance use responses, and 15 took place in response to a public disturbance. The majority of those receiving services are males in the 55 to 64 age range. It is interesting to note that Be Well benefits housed and unhoused clients. (Be Well Data Dashboard)
  5. Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. you can begin signing up for SANDS programs. Check out infant and toddler classes, special events, adult classes, and Senior Center activities. If you download the digital version of the catalog, you can get a head start on signing up for classes! (SANDS)
