  1. The Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center in Huntington Beach said they have seen “dozens” of dead Brandt’s cormorants. Officials “explained that all the recent marine birds started showing up at Sunset, Huntington and Seal beaches, and a couple in Newport Beach and Crystal Cove.” Necropsies revealed protozoal encephalitis, which is caused by parasites. We learned Monday that “so far, there is no known cure for the disease.” (Spectrum News 1)
  2. Last Monday, HB lost the Page brothers. Throughout the week, the community came together to honor and remember them. Assembly Member Janet Nguyen said that “no parent should ever have to know what it is like to lose a child, let alone two.” The community raised “more than $190,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to help bury the brothers.” “Businesses are holding fundraisers and donating food.” And you have most certainly seen students from various high schools wear yellow and green, Edison colors, to express their support. (CBS)
  3. The controversy surrounding rent hikes at mobile home parks continues. As of last week, “in Huntington Beach, six out of 17 mobile home parks are now owned by corporate investors.” A Skandia Mobile Country Club resident complained that “the rents go up to levels they can’t afford.” Tenants are asking the Mobile Home Advisory Board to establish rent stabilization for mobile home parks. Owners “oppose this overreaching and unnecessary effort to thwart the will of voters and pave the way to bring rent control to Huntington Beach.” (Fox)
  4. The Huntington Beach City Council held a shortened meeting Tuesday. On the agenda were “recognition of the Marina High School girls’ wrestling team for winning the CIF-SS Central Division championship” and discussion about “modifying salary and benefits for city employees not represented by a bargaining unit/union.” (OC Tribune)
  5. An insider report on Monday revealed that Five Points Plaza is not just for shopping, but actually “a foodie frenzy.” Cases in point are Hashigo Sushi, Lemon Thai Cuisine, and Mario’s Mexican Food & Cantina. Finish off authentic meals with sweets from Duck Donuts! (Locale Magazine)
