Good day, people of Huntington Beach; today is World Water Day! It's me again, Sylvia, your host of the Huntington Beach Daily.

Not all parents and teachers are on board with taking off masks. Also, could a portion of State Highway Route 39 be renamed? Finally, two of 5,513 individuals at the HBCSD tested positive for COVID-19.

  1. There is a no-mask backlash brewing among some parents and educators. We learned Thursday that a Huntington Beach City School District teacher didn’t believe it fair “that safety measures are being relaxed before everyone has an opportunity to be vaccinated.” The teacher argued that everything shut down for adults, but that “nobody seems to care about the little ones.” These are children who are too young for the vaccines, might be immunocompromised, or both. (Press-Telegram)
  2. Assemblymember Janet Nguyen and several of her colleagues introduced Assembly Concurrent Resolution 162 last week. It would give a portion of State Highway Route 39’s stretch within HB city limits the name “Officer Nicholas Vella Memorial Highway.” “Our community has come together alongside the police departments throughout the region to mourn the loss of HBPD Officer Nicholas Vella,” she said. (OC Breeze)
  3. The Huntington Beach City School District released its latest COVID-19 count numbers on Monday. It reported that there were two cases among 5,513 individuals, both of them at Dwyer Middle School. (HBCSD)
  4. When is a mugging a good thing? When it happens to a group of whale watchers, and it refers to giant gray whales “bobbing, rolling and even flashing their tails within a few feet of the small raft.” Newport Coastal Adventure passengers witnessed this behavior on Thursday evening for about 45 minutes. “The raft’s engines were powered off and that the tour guide kept their distance until the creatures approached them, drifting at sea.” (Fox)
  5. The annual Pupchella at Paséa is coming back! It is scheduled for Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. “Treat them to barky bites and drinks, live entertainment headlined by the Tijuana Dogs (at dog-friendly volumes), costume contests with prizes, dog adoptions, games, shopping with pet-focused vendors, and other pup-centric activities!” (Meritage Collection)
