  1. Here's a shoutout to Cecilia Tran, a senior at Westminster High School! Last week, “Good Morning America, which has partnered with College Board’s BigFuture, announced 25 students who have each been selected to receive a $40,000 college scholarship,” and Cecilia was among them! She plans to attend California State University, Long Beach, and study biochemistry. (HB News)
  2. STEM education is a big deal at Edison. In fact, it’s a hands-on affair. “Students within the Academy of Sustainability and Engineering (ASE) program at Edison are designing and building sustainable living structures to beautify Edison’s campus!” The projects combined unique approaches with creativity and problem-solving skills. (@HBUHSD)
  3. COVID-19 numbers in the county are a mixed bag. As of Friday, “deaths went from four to two, and ICU use dropped from 16 to 14.” That’s the good news. “However, the number of confirmed new cases increased to 159 from Wednesday’s report of 87, and hospitalizations climbed from 89 to 96.” (OC Tribune)
  4. Is there a way to reduce or prevent beach erosion? On Friday, we learned that University of California, Irvine researchers say a sediment bypass in flood control channels and dams could be the answer. “When we have a storm event and there’s water flowing here at a fast speed, we want to take advantage of that water so that it isn’t just moving water, but it’s also moving sand towards the beach.” (Spectrum News 1)
  5. There’s a study that claims “sea-level rise could wipe out precious habitat at Huntington Beach’s Bolsa Chica wetlands and eventually flood neighborhoods just east of the ecological reserve.” However, there are ways to avoid this ecological catastrophe. Experts suggested Friday that “ongoing estuary maintenance and continued improvements — including new levees and elevating some existing wetlands — would preserve and improve existing wildlife ecosystems. Such work also would bolster the buffer that the wetlands provide for adjacent homes against rising seas.” (The OCR/paywall)
