'No Better Champion' For Laguna Beach: Local Hero

ORANGE COUNTY, CA — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented and changing times.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know about these outstanding people and their stories.

How do you know the local hero?

I initially got to know Heidi as a result of her involvement with my workplace, Alzheimer's Orange County. We both live in Laguna Beach and I have had multiple opportunities to witness Heidi's dedication to our city.

What does the local hero do?

Ms. Miller, former owner of the Heidi's Yogurt franchise currently owns and operates two retail businesses in Laguna Beach. Despite her busy work schedule, she makes time to volunteer for many causes, including her Board position with Laguna Playhouse, as well as her support of city-wide events through the Chamber of Commerce, and countless other commitments.

Why do you believe the local hero should be recognized or honored?

I have mentioned just a few examples of Heidi's generosity and have saved the best for last. Out of the sheer goodness of her heart, she donated her kidney to a man she didn't even know when she hear his story at a fundraiser she attended.

Giving the gift of life to a stranger makes her an amazing hero in my eyes. As a result of her experience, Heidi has formed a foundation to offset costs for individuals who wish to donate, yet lack the means to finance it. She tirelessly advocates for organ donation and has personally helped many individuals find donors.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the local hero?

Heidi inspires me to be a better person. The fact that she "shared her spare" is so inspiring, as is her commitment to our city. Heidi is everywhere and participating in everything our town has to offer, there is no better champion and advocate
