Brace for It, Lake Elsinore! NWS Predicting Strong Winds

Winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour with gusts that may reach 60 mph are forecast in some locales.

Very strong and gusty winds are expected to develop Thursday in parts of Riverside County, including the Coachella Valley, and continue into the upcoming weekend as a trough of low pressure moves across the region.

Winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour with gusts that may reach 60 mph in some locales in the forecast Thursday prompted a National Weather Service high wind warning for the Coachella Valley, the San Gorgonio Pass and the Riverside County mountains from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday. A less severe wind advisory for the valleys around Riverside will run concurrently as winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph are expected.

The winds could potentially damage unsecured outdoor objects, according to the NWS.

"Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage," according to the weather service.

The wind may be strong enough to kick up sand and dust alongside desert roadways, which could make for hazardous driving conditions on portions of Interstates 10 and 15, and on state Route 111 in the Coachella Valley. Motorists, especially those in high profile vehicles, were urged to use extra caution.
